The excavations there were a small part of a major depression-era archaeological project designed to put people back to work in simple government-sponsored projects. The pottery from this site was immediately recognized by Arthur R. Kelly, who was in charge of the excavations, as unique and distinct from the pottery of any other site excavated in the central Georgia area.
